“So, dudes and dudettes, we’re going to play a little game now that everyone’s here,” Alfred Jones said, producing a hat from the closet behind him.

Almost immediately, every guest at Alfred’s party let out an annoyed sigh, yourself included. You knew where this was going; it happened every time you went to Alfred’s house, even if there were only a few people there.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Roderich Edelstein said, rolling his eyes.

“Again?” Kiku Honda asked, a blush creeping across his face.

“You bet!” the American yelled, handing out small strips of paper to each person. “Write your name on your slip of paper and put it in the hat,” he said. “You should all know how this goes by now,” he began, smirking, “except for my bro Arthur. It’s the first time he’s agreed to actually come to one of my parties. I wonder why he’s decided to come tonight…” Alfred said the last part almost mockingly.

“Shut the hell up, you git. I j-just felt bad for never attending. You are my brother after all,” the British man with the bushy eyebrows said, blushing ever so slightly.

“Okay,” Alfred sang. “Everyone have their name in the hat? Good. I’ll go make sure there’s enough room in the closet,” he said, winking, hat in hand.

You groaned and looked over toward Arthur Kirkland, a long time friend and secret crush, rolling your eyes. He laughed at the gesture and made his way over to where you were standing. “So what exactly does this game--”

Before Arthur could finish his sentence, Alfred emerged from the closet happily. “Very roomy, bros. Alright… _____, you choose first. Might as well get your turn over with,” he said, a sly grin spread across his face.

“If you insist,” you said, eyeing him suspiciously. You put your hand into the hat and noticed something a bit off. It seemed as if there weren’t as many pieces of paper as guests, but you brushed the thought aside. After a moment of feeling around, you pulled out a slip of paper and read it aloud hesitantly. “...Arthur.”

“Yes, love?” he asked, unaware of the game and its intentions.

Alfred ushered the two of you into the closet and locked it before anyone could clarify.   “What the bloody hell is this all about?” Arthur asked a bit angrily.
Blushing, you quickly explained the game and sat down. Arthur followed your lead and sat across from you in the closet, which honestly wasn’t all that roomy.

“What an ass,” he breathed. You noticed him blushing despite the lack of proper lighting; the only light in the closet was peeping in through the crack between the door and the floor. “I really can’t trust him with anything,” he said, quickly covering his mouth with his hands.

“What do you mean?” you asked, surprised by this unintentional slip of information.

“Well, uh, I told Alfred something that I probably should have kept to myself. All he does is cause trouble,” Arthur said sheepishly.

“You know you can trust me with anything. I won’t ever cause trouble,” you said sincerely. “What’s the matter? I can get Alfred to back off if you need me to.”

“I’m afraid it’s a bit too late to get him to back off,” he said, chuckling. “I suppose I should tell you, though, considering it does concern you and our time in this closet is limited.”

You nodded, encouraging him to continue. You felt butterflies in your stomach.

“We’ve been friends for a long while now, love, haven’t we? You see, sometimes when two people are friends for a long, long time they--”

“Artie, I don’t mean to be rude, but we’re running out of time in here.”

“Right,” he said, realizing stalling wouldn’t help a thing. He took a deep breath. “I… I really love you, _____,” he said, his face turning red.

Your face turned equally as red as you took in his confession. His green eyes searched your face for any sort of reaction, but you quickly caught his gaze.

“Artie… I… I love you, too,” you said, shocked at the suddenness of the situation. You were perplexed by how easy it was to get that off your chest, too. You had been considering how to tell him for months, and it just sort of happened in a closet at Alfred’s house. “I love you, Artie,” you said a second time, but with more confidence.

Arthur seemed relieved. “_____, I didn’t know how to tell you and I wanted it to be more romantic. I’m sorry it had to come out here, even though I did come here tonight because Alfred said you’d be attending. I just wasn’t expecting all this to happen,” he said, wanting to say so many things all at once.

“It’s okay, Artie. I’ve been wanting to say this for so long; I don’t even care that the truth came out in a freaking closet. I just really love you,” you said, getting up on your knees and hugging Arthur around the neck.

He wrapped his arms around your waist affectionately and leaned in slowly to kiss you on the lips. Following his lead, you did the same. When your lips met it was like fireworks. You had never felt so much love in your whole life as Arthur kissed you passionately for a few long moments. The closet door swung open as you started to run your fingers through his blonde hair.

You heard a few gasps from outside the closet as you quickly pulled yourself away from Arthur. He was blushing like crazy, but he was smiling. He stood up and held his hand out to you. The two of you walked out of the closet hand in hand, grinning sheepishly. Alfred winked at the two of you, giving Arthur a thumbs up with the hand holding the hat.

Before anyone could say anything, Arthur tripped on something on the floor. He fell to the ground not all that gracefully. He swiftly checked to see what he tripped on. It was a hat, identical to the one in Alfred’s hand. The smile on Alfred’s face turned to horror as Arthur began sifting through the names in the hat. Every single one read Arthur.

Making the connection, you grabbed the hat out of Alfred’s hand and looked through the slips of paper. This one had every guest’s name in it. That would explain why the hat you pulled from seemed to have less paper in it. Obviously Alfred didn’t count out enough when he set up the rigged hat. He must have left it in the closet and pulled it out when he was “making sure it had enough room.”

“You planned this,” Arthur hissed at Alfred.

“I didn’t think it would be a big deal! I mean, you told me you loved her! I wanted to give you a chance to tell her,” Alfred stammered.

“Awww, how sweet!” an Italian accent from the party said happily.

Arthur breathed in deeply. “Thank you for giving me that chance, Alfred, even though it was completely rigged,” he said, sighing. “I appreciate it, despite the rigging involved. Now I can openly say I love _____.”

You smiled up at Arthur, your cheeks a light shade of pink. Your heart pounded as he kissed you in front of everyone.

“Get a room,” a familiar voice, which you identified to be Francis’s, said laughing.

“I don’t know about that. I haven’t even asked _____ to be my girlfriend yet! What do you think?” Arthur asked tenderly.

“That would be grand,” you said, giggling.

It’s official!” Alfred yelled. The party cheered for you and Arthur.
